Be Aware of Bag Sizing

This month Schad reminds you that all bags are not created equal.  Bag sizes and quantities vary across material types, manufacturers, and can even be custom bagged.  Make sure you don’t assume the bag size when determining how much material a pour is going to take, or how much water is required to achieve the desired physical properties.

Some manufacturers package their material in standard 55-pound bags, for others, the standard is 50 pounds, and for others, it can be a different number entirely.  Material density can also play a substantial roll in bag sizing.  A 55-pound bag of a lightweight material might be enormous so it is not uncommon for these types of material to have fewer pounds in a bag.

Another potential mistake could be assuming that bulk bags are all the same size.  Common sizes of bulk bags are often between 500 and 3,000 pounds and a lot of them don’t look very different on a pallet.  Make it a point to always read the bags and packaging information to make sure that materials are mixed properly, and materials do not run short.
