Schad Refractory Employee of the mOnth AugustHaving spent nearly 13 years with Schad Refractory, Kirk has become a vital member of our team. Throughout the years, he has become very knowledgeable in many trades, and continues expanding his skill sets. His long experience with the organization provides an emphasis on safety, unwavering teamwork ability, quality in all work projects and a strong drive toward mission accomplishment.

Kirk has earned the honor of Employee of the Month for his dedication, knowledge and skills. His ability to task organize current workloads among the crew, train newly hired employees to established standards, and to monitor and perform all actions in a safe manner has bettered our company as a whole.

Meet Kirk Walker:

What do you like most about working at Schad?

The variety of work. Working on something different every day.

What is your favorite part about your job?

There is always work to do. Always something new coming in the shop.

How has Schad helped your career development, and what are your future career goals?

Schad has taught me trade skills like welding, woodwork, and metal fabrication. Future goals for me are to continue becoming proficient in these skills, while picking up a few more.

How would you describe the Schad culture?

The culture is getting better, the morale in the yard and comradery right now is good. It is safety driven and team orientated.

What is your fondest memory of working at Schad?

The best memories are with my first crew of guys, Rich Hull and James Lezotte, we worked hard on a lot of projects during long hours. 

What advice do you have for future Schad candidates?

My advice is “Try to keep a good attitude. Some jobs might be tedious and frustrating, but there is always something worse you could be doing.”

What do you like to do outside of work?

Hunting, fishing, along with any outdoor activity.

What is something unique about you?

I have been married 25 years and am an excellent Beanbag Toss player.

If you could go to one concert, past or present, which would it be?

Led Zeppelin circa 1981-82.

If given the chance, who would you like to be for a day?

Kevin Vandam (Professional Fisherman, Tournament champ)
