Even during the holidays, Schad was available to help a customer whose reverb furnace needed repair.

Schad Refractory contractors work on an aluminum reverb furnace.During the holidays, Schad’s Louisville Business Unit traveled to North Carolina to replace a 55,000-lb aluminum reverb furnace.

Relining the reverb furnace involved several tasks:

  • Breaking up old refractory with a demolition machine
  • Installing back-up materials
  • Form construction
  • Drying of the lining

How we overcame manpower challenges during a holiday

There were several challenges involved with this project. We were working in close proximity with other contractors and plant personnel. Temperatures were unpredictably cold, which affected materials and the drying process.

But perhaps the biggest challenge was finding manpower to staff an around the clock project during the holidays.

We were able to overcome this challenge thanks to some resourceful thinking by the Schad team. By forming and pouring the hot wall and well in a single pour, we decreased the amount of manpower needed. This also reduced the amount of time needed to complete the project.

“We were fortunate to tie up with some talented local tradesmen. And we had a couple of very dedicated foremen on the project. They went the extra mile on this one to make sure the project was delivered successfully and safely.”

– Tyler VanWinkle, Louisville Regional Manager
