Instead of replacing a 55,000 lb. furnace, we saved our customers thousands by repairing it.

In late April 2017, Schad received a call from a customer at an aluminum die-cast facility in Wisconsin.

The customer was convinced that the 55,000 lb. re-melt furnace at the facility was beyond repair. But after an investigation, we were happy to report that we could extend the furnace’s life.

Our customer was very happy about this change of outlook. Replacing the furnace refractory would have been quite costly. By getting it repaired instead, the company was saving thousands of dollars.

Re-lining the re-melt furnace required:

  • Demolishing old refractory
  • Repairing steel components of the furnace
  • Applying vibration cast, gunned and rammed refractory products

One of the products greatest challenges was removing a 20,000 lb. slug (frozen aluminum and corundum) from the furnace. Once the slug was removed, repairs could begin.

“This really could have been a full reline, but we can handle anything that gets thrown at us.”

-Schad foreman, Jim Saucier.

“When it comes to our customers, Schad is in it for the long term, even if this means performing reduced work scopes in the short term. This project is a perfect example of this principle.”

-Schad President, Ross Lee.
