Melting FurnaceIn November, Schad performed maintenance work on a round-top melting furnace at a Western Kentucky aluminum plant.

The scope included removal and replacement of the ramp, sill, jambs, and arch as well as cold cleaning the furnace and repairing the bellyband.

As always, there was an ambitious schedule and high customer expectations.  “We have worked to build a relationship with this customer and are grateful that they had enough trust in us to give us this opportunity,” said Tyler VanWinkle, Schad’s Regional Manager responsible for the project.

The project included several challenges. Unrelated steel repairs associated with the furnace took longer than anticipated causing the project to be slightly behind schedule when the furnace was turned over to Schad. Additionally, the deterioration at the bellyband was greater than originally anticipated.

Refractory Maintenance EquipmentSchad rallied additional manpower and was already prepared with the additional equipment required for the bellyband repair which enabled the team to get back on track and turn the furnace over for production on-time.

“We are excited that we came through for the customer.  We hope to continue to earn additional opportunities to be a valuable partner at this facility for years to come,” said VanWinkle.

Central Kentucky Refinery Demolition

Refinery Demolition

Schad recently assisted in the demolition of a Central Kentucky refinery that has a large area being torn down in order to accommodate new upgraded processing equipment.  The new equipment should increase the facility’s capacity and efficiency.

The project included the removal of the refractory materials inside of six gas-fired heaters.  Schad was on-site for four days.

This project is an example of how Schad can provide assistance during various stages of a project or a facility’s life cycle.  “We are in the unique position of having the right guys and the right equipment in close proximity to the facility,” said SchadRegional Manager, Tyler VanWinkle.  “While demolition is rarely the only service we provide, we are looking forward to having the opportunity to be a part of the facility’s improvements,” he continued.
