Remember to keep refractory products dry during the rainy fall season

The fall is officially upon us and as is common at this time of year, we should expect to see a lot of rain.  During the summer months, it is easy to take the warm dry weather for granted and in many cases you can get away with leaving materials outside without fear of them getting wet, however, with the cooler-wetter weather, refractory consumers need to be aware of the adverse effects that water can have on refractory materials.

Rainwater or standing water can damage nearly all types of refractories including castables, plastics, insulating products, and ceramic fiber.  While some brick is pre-fired and is stable even when exposed to rain, others, especially kiln brick (MgO – magnesia brick) will hydrate and the brick will be ruined.  Don’t take a chance.  Protect your refractory materials from inclement weather.

Most manufacturers do a good job of protecting their materials through the use of packaging, but packaging can often be damaged during transit or while being moved around a facility.  Weather protection can be accomplished in many ways and depending on the project size, location, and products being used, weather protection could range from simply coving exposed pallets with a tarp to using an on-site warehouse or building a temporary structure.  In other instances “just-in-time” delivery may be an option.

If you are concerned about how inclement weather could impact your next outage or damage your refractory materials, Schad can help provide solutions.  Give us a call today to find out how.
