Be Prepared for Changing Weather Conditions

Although we have enjoyed very mild weather here in Detroit throughout the fall, we all know that the seasons are changing.  With the changing seasons comes a new set of challenges and potential issues associated with the decreasing temperatures.

Generally speaking, material manufacturers recommend casting refractory materials at temperatures greater than 60 degrees Fahrenheit.  Casting materials at temperatures below this number can result in increased material set times and decreased material property values.  It is critical to store materials in climate controlled environments prior to installation.  Don’t forget to make sure that the mixing water is also a suitable casting temperature.

There are several ways to measure temperatures and ensure that the materials and water are a suitable temperature prior to installation, but this is not something that should be overlooked during a refractory project.  Schad can offer many tips and solutions to our customers during the planning phase of a project.  For example, we can use our heated warehouse space and fleet of trucks to deliver materials just-in-time for installation, preventing them from sitting in the cold for several days waiting for installation.

To hear other potential solutions and suggestions with regard to making sure that your materials are being installed per the recommended procedures, reach out to us today.
